INK Centre was among a few African media organisations to participate at the annual International Journalism Festival (IJF) in Perugia, Italy.
The conference attracts an audience of 1200 including 700 speakers from over 50 countries.
INK journalists, Ntibiynane Ntibinyane and Joel Konopo participated at the five – day festival in line with the Centre’s mandate of advocating for free press in Botswana and Africa. Ntibinyane presented on investigative journalism in Southern Africa, while Konopo used Mosu story to demonstrate how African journalists are turning to technology to tell a story.
By far the largest journalism conference in terms of attendance, journalists who attend the IJF return home to make a major impact on issues that affect their communities. IFJ covers issues that seek to address the future of journalism. This includes topics on algorithms, innovative approaches to story telling and reporting on terrorism. INK was one of three African media organisations to participate at the journalism festival. In its 12th year, the festival was sponsored by Google, Facebook and Amazon. It attracts journalists from large media organisations such as The Financial Times, CNN, Sky News, The New York Times, Bloomberg, and several other data driven journalists from media organisations such as NowThis and BuzzFeed. Topics covered at the 2018 festival included sexual harassment, disinformation, climate change, cyber war, humanitarian crisis, investigative journalism, basic income, trust in the media, migration, fact checking, news literacy and freedom of expression.
